Local Asthma team recognised for outstanding care

Nurses from the Children’s Asthma Team in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin have been recognised for their exceptional dedication and impact on patient care.

Kate Perkins and Laura Scott were recently presented with Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust’s Nursing Hero Award, as well as being awarded the Trust’s Cohesive element of the Agility Cohesion and Empowerment (ACE) Award, celebrating their compassion and collaborative, high-performing approach.

These awards recognise outstanding contributions, shining a spotlight on those making a real difference in the lives of patients and families.

Laura Scott, Community Children’s Asthma Nurse Specialist, said: “The team are honoured to accept the Ace award in recognition of the vitally important work that aims to improve the asthma outcomes for children and young people with asthma.”

Laura Scott, Community Children’s Asthma Nurse Specialist, added: “These awards are a recognition of both the individual and collaborative approach and the compassion, commitment and dedication of all Children’s Asthma Team members.

“We are committed to improving asthma education, accessibility and outcomes for all, with a particular focus on those from disadvantaged communities. We have thoroughly enjoyed supporting patients and families as they manage the daily challenges of living with asthma and hope to be able to continue advocating for a high standard of equitable asthma care.”

Kate Medhurst, Community Children’s Service Manager at Shropcom, said: “On behalf of Shropcom, we are immensely proud to have these amazing individuals in our organisation. Their hard work and dedication have made huge strides in improving asthma care and patient experience for children and young people. Congratulations to both!”

Commenting on the team’s success, Vanessa Whatley, Chief Nursing Officer at NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, said: “We are incredibly proud of our children and young people Asthma nursing team. Their work is a brilliant example of what compassionate, joined-up care looks like in action.

“These awards are well-deserved recognition of their hard work, clinical expertise and commitment to making a real difference in the lives of local people living with asthma.”

Having been instrumental in developing a community children’s asthma service, including enhancing their specialist skills such as non-medical prescribing to support families locally, the Nursing Hero Award celebrates the team’s exceptional commitment to delivering safe, person-centred asthma care to children and young people across the county.

The ACE Award recognises the team’s collaborative excellence with judges noting how they work seamlessly with different parts of the system, including hospitals, primary care and community settings to deliver joined-up, effective support for patients living with asthma.
