Man with an upset face tlaking on the phone. Text reads: Jamar had been feeling very low.Jamar's Story

When I noticed my mood wasn’t improving, I knew it was time to seek help. I called my GP surgery and was able to schedule an appointment with a Mental Health Practitioner who’s part of the practice’s Extended Healthcare Team.

The appointment was longer than a typical GP slot, which meant I had time to talk through how I was feeling without being rushed. I felt genuinely listened to. The practitioner referred me to the Talking Therapies service and booked  a follow-up appointment to see how I was getting on and to make sure I was accessing the right support.

This experience showed me that help is available—and often closer than we think. You don’t always need to wait for a GP appointment.

Extended Healthcare Teams include professionals like:

  • Mental Health Practitioners
  • Physiotherapists
  • Clinical Pharmacists
  • Social Prescribers
  • Health and Wellbeing Coaches

They’re trained to support a wide range of physical, mental and emotional health needs, and can often see you sooner than a GP.
