Ella's Story
Recently, Ella suddenly became unwell with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea, which I recognised as likely being norovirus. Fortunately, I was prepared and had a well-stocked medicine cabinet with essentials such as a digital thermometer to monitor her.
I kept her at home, encouraged plenty of rest, and made sure she drank small sips of water regularly to prevent dehydration. We also followed good hygiene practices to stop the virus from spreading, including, regular handwashing, disinfecting surfaces, and keeping her isolated from others in the household.
Within a couple of days, she started to feel much better and her energy began to return. I was reassured that, by managing her symptoms with self-care and close monitoring, she recovered well without the need for medical treatment and we helped prevent others from catching it.
Self-Care Tips for Norovirus
If you or a loved one has symptoms of norovirus:
- Stay home and rest
- Drink fluids regularly to avoid dehydration
- Use a digital thermometer to monitor temperature
- Practice good hygiene – wash hands often and clean surfaces
- Avoid preparing food for others until at least 48 hours after symptoms stop
Most people recover within a few days with self-care alone. If you're unsure about symptoms or need advice, speak to your local pharmacist or visit NHS 111 online.
