Winter Outreach Wellbeing (WOW) - Bringing Wellbeing to the Heart of Rural Shropshire

Many of our communities across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin face increasing health and wellbeing risks due to rurality. Winter can be a challenging time for our residents due to financial pressures, increased health risks from cold weather, and mental health challenges such as loneliness caused by darker days and isolation.

The Winter Outreach Wellbeing (WOW) project, driven by Shropshire Council, is going out into Shropshire’s most rural and underserved areas to bring valuable health and wellbeing services directly to those who need them most. Listening to residents' needs and concerns and providing targeted support, making a positive difference in many lives!

Some of the key offerings of the WOW project includes:

  • Mental health support
  • Mini health checks
  • Social groups and support services
  • Cost of living support
  • Energy and food advice, guidance and support
  • Lifestyle information (eg smoking cessation)
  • Vaccination information
  • Screening information
  • 'Think' campaign information

How you can get involved:

  • Spread the word: Tell colleagues, friends or community groups about upcoming mobile hub visits and the variety of support on offer.
  • Partner with Shropshire Council: If your organisation works in rural wellbeing, health, social care, community development or cost-of-living support - reach out to the Outreach team.
  • Attend or host a hub session: If you’re in a village, workplace or community group, you might be able to host a mini-hub, share the space or invite the Outreach team.
  • Give feedback: Residents are central to this work. If you’re engaging with the hub, let us know what works and what doesn’t, this helps shape future delivery.
