Autism in Schools is a pilot project working with six pilot schools to develop new ways of supporting autistic children and their parents in the school setting, to ensure support is put in at the earliest opportunity and to prevent escalation of mental health difficulties. This work is being evaluated with a view to embedding the learning across all schools.

To date the pilot has:

  • Developed a training offer for schools and is working with the local authorities and other training providers to co-ordinate the training offers to all schools.
  • Established parent carer forums in the pilot schools to support positive relationships between parents and school staff.
  • Worked with the Bee-U service to offer additional support to the pilot schools in the form of sensory audits and training.
  • Worked with children and young people from the pilot schools to hear their voice and support them in understanding their autistic identity.

During 2023/24 we will be working with our system partners to embed the learning from Autism in Schools in our service offer for all schools across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
