Get Ahead of Asthma
6 August 2025
Health leaders across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin are launching a local campaign urging children, young people, and their families to ‘Get Ahead of Asthma’ this summer by booking an asthma review before heading back to school.
Every September, the local NHS sees an increase in children and young people suffering from asthma attacks as pupils return to classrooms across the county after the summer break.
By scheduling a routine check-up with their GP, nurse or other healthcare professional, children and young people can see how their asthma is and make sure they have the right plan in place to stay on top of it.
Lorna Clarson, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin said: “Our ‘Get Ahead of Asthma’ campaign carries a really important message - asthma can be managed and asthma attacks can be avoided with the right support.
“Asthma reviews are really important for children and young people. They allow healthcare professionals to check if the lungs are healthy and they’re also an opportunity for the individual, along with their family or carer, to talk about their asthma, how it might be impacting them day-to-day and what they can do to stay in control of it.”
You can talk to your health professional about:
-
- Symptoms like coughing or wheezing
- Asthma medicines that may need changing or updating
- The best way to use inhalers to keep lungs healthy
- How to avoid asthma attacks
- What to do if an asthma attack does happen
- An asthma action plan to help keep asthma under control

An asthma review helps children and young people to manage their asthma in the best way possible. It could lower their risk of an asthma attack and help them to live their best life. It is worth booking an asthma review even if your child is well.
Contact your GP practice to book an asthma review.
