Foot Care
Diabetes foot care is crucial for preventing serious complications. Daily foot checks, proper washing and drying, moisturising, nail care, and wearing appropriate footwear are essential.
Regular professional foot checks are also recommended to catch any potential issues early.
You can also perform daily foot checks yourself at home by inspecting your feet for any cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or changes in skin colour. Use a mirror to check the soles of your feet if needed or ask a family member for help.
Wash and Dry Carefully
Wash feet daily with warm (not hot) water and mild soap. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections.
Moisturise
Apply a moisturizing cream to the top and bottom of your feet but avoid putting it between your toes to prevent fungal growth.
Nail Care
Trim toenails straight across and file down any sharp edges. If you have difficulty trimming your nails, ask a podiatrist for assistance.
Wear Proper Footwear
Always wear shoes and socks, even indoors, to protect your feet from injury. Break in new shoes gradually and ensure your shoes fit well and have a smooth lining.
Avoid Going Barefoot
Avoid walking barefoot, especially on hot surfaces like sand or tiles, as you might not feel injuries or burns due to nerve damage.
Be Cautious with Corns and Calluses
Do not attempt to treat corns or calluses yourself. Over-the-counter treatments can damage the skin, especially if you have nerve damage.
Manage Blood Sugar
Keep your blood sugar levels within the target range to minimize the risk of nerve damage and other complications.
Quit Smoking
Smoking can restrict blood flow to your feet, increasing the risk of complications.
If you notice any new sores, blisters, or other problems, seek medical attention immediately to prevent infections and further complications please visit your GP.
