Eating well and making healthy lifestyle choices

As we get older, looking after our health becomes even more important. Eating well, staying active, drinking enough fluids, stopping smoking and cutting down on alcohol can all help you stay independent and continue doing the things that matter to you.

These healthy habits can help maintain strength and energy, support your immune system, reduce the risk of illness and falls, and improve your overall wellbeing.

Simple ways to stay well:

  • Eat regular meals throughout the day.
  • Eating enough matters too. As we get older, changes in appetite lead to weight loss, weakness and loss of muscle.
  • Include protein-rich include foods such as meat, fish, eggs, beans, lentils and dairy products. Starchy carbohydrates and healthy fats also provide energy and help you maintain a healthy weight.
  • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and include foods containing calcium and vitamin D.
  • Drink enough fluids throughout the day, especially in hot weather.
  • If your appetite is low, try eating smaller meals more often and add nutritious snacks between meals.
  • Keep active in ways that suit you, such as walking, gardening or exercise classes.
  • If you drink alcohol, stay within recommended guidelines and consider drinking less.
  • If you smoke, stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health at any age.

You may benefit from extra support if you:

  • Have lost weight without trying or have your clothes become noticeably looser.
  • Live alone, often skip meals or struggle to prepare food.
  • Have difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  • Feel tired, weak or less steady on your feet.
  • Smoke and would like support to quit.
  • Are concerned about your alcohol intake.
  • Find shopping, cooking or staying active difficult.
