Hantavirus

8 May 2026

You may have seen recent media reports about hantavirus and feel concerned.

We would like to reassure residents that the risk of hantavirus infection in the UK remains very low. Cases are extremely rare, and there is no evidence of increased risk to the general public.

Hantavirus is mainly linked to contact with infected rodents or their droppings, most often in specific occupational or environmental settings. Most people are not at risk, and everyday good hygiene practices are usually enough to stay safe.

If you have had significant contact with rodents and feel unwell with flu‑like symptoms, you should seek medical advice. You can contact NHS 111 for guidance or speak to your GP if symptoms persist or worsen.

For anyone who would like more detailed information, we have included a link to the latest guidance from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA):

UKHSA: What is hantavirus, how is it transmitted and what are the symptoms?
