Type 1 Diabetes - CYP
This is the most common type of diabetes in children and is caused by an autoimmune condition. The body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to an absolute lack of insulin. It cannot be prevented.
Signs & Symptoms
- Toilet: Frequent urination, new-onset bedwetting, or heavier diapers in babies.
- Thirsty: Excessive, unquenchable thirst.
- Tired: Unusual fatigue and lack of energy.
- Thinner: Unexplained weight loss.
Other Signs and Symptoms:
- Fruity-smelling breath
- Blurred vision
- Abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting
If you/your child has any of these symptoms, contact your GP for a blood test to check for diabetes.
Treatment
- Daily insulin is required, typically administered via multiple daily injections or an insulin pump.
- Many children use a CGM to monitor glucose levels throughout the day.
- Count carbohydrates and balance meals with insulin dosages.
- Regular physical activity helps manage blood sugar levels.
