Everyone Belongs Here: Celebrating Black History Month Through Belonging

This October, we are celebrating Black History month by reflecting on our ‘Everyone belongs Here’ campaign. When we talk about Black History Month, we often think about amazing people like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Mary Seacole; people who showed courage, talent, and strength. But the journey isn’t over yet. Many Black and other racialised people still face places where they don’t feel truly seen or included. Small acts of unfairness and bigger barriers can still make it hard for everyone to belong.

The ‘Everyone Belongs Here’ campaign invites us to ask: how can we use this month not only to remember the history, but to make real change to equality, diversity and inclusion within our workplaces, healthcare settings, neighbourhoods, and beyond?

Vanessa Whatley, Executive Lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Chief Nursing Officer at NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, said: “Black History Month reminds us that healthcare is not just about treatment, it’s about trust, equity, and understanding amongst both healthcare workers and patients alike. The ‘Everyone Belongs Here’ campaign champions kindness, celebrates difference, and recognises the vital roles everyone plays within our system.”

“We believe in inclusion. We are proud to have a workforce that reflects many backgrounds and cultures - among our colleagues, hundreds bring with them heritage and experience from outside the UK. Their diverse perspectives enrich the care we provide every day.”

Some words from our Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin inclusion advocates:

  • “Belonging is about being seen, heard and valued exactly as you are” - Hope, Nurse, Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust
  • “Our strength lies in your differences” - Musili, Emergency Planner, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust
  • “Treat everyone equally regardless of their background” - Saddaf, Ward Clerk Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust

These voices remind us that belonging is more than surface gestures - it is about building cultures where individuals feel safe, respected, and genuinely valued.

The ‘Everyone Belongs Here’ campaign is an ongoing commitment to making inclusion part of our everyday culture. This Black History Month, we invite you to explore the campaign, reflect on what belonging means to you, and join us in building a health and care system where everyone belongs.
